Hi Humans,

Today’s guest writer is Stacy Mantle, Founder of PetsWeekly. Stacy is writing about something potential pet parents may wonder: are there certain breeds that are more destructive and hyperactive than others?

When we discuss destructive behavior and hyperactivity, we’re actually speaking about the level of intelligence in a pet. The propensity to engage in destructive activity is (in most cases) directly related to how bored a dog might be. The bottom line is this: Intelligent dogs grow bored and frustrated if they aren’t provided plenty of mental and physical exercise.

Destruction and hyperactivity are symptoms of bored dogs, they are not personality traits. So, which dog breeds are most likely to revert to destructive behavior if you don’t keep them busy?

  1. Australian Shepherd: Widely known for their intelligence, this is a breed that must be given plenty of exercise and mental puzzles.
  2. Border Collie: These dogs are highly competitive and incredibly intelligent. It’s been said that if you don’t give this breed a job, they will find one for themselves – and you probably won’t like the one they choose.
  3. Siberian Husky: These dogs are known for their commitment to hard work and companions. It’s important to give them lots of playtime and lots of exercise – this breed was first used to pull heavy sleighs through snow, so you will have to get creative to find a workout that will get them tired.
  4. Dalmation: These dogs love long runs and plenty of room to explore. They are highly intelligent and it’s important to provide lots of activity for them.Consider picking up a smart toy for them and be sure to get them outdoors for some activity.
  5. Jack Russell Terrier: These highly intelligent dogs were bred to hunt foxes in England. They need a lot of intelligent play to keep them happy. They love puzzles, tunnels and running around.

While this list includes just five breeds, it’s very important to remember that ALL dogs require mental and physical exercise during the day. Some dogs prefer to do that exercise with their humans, while others are more likely to stay within the pack. Whatever type of dog you may have, keep them mentally stimulated through food puzzles and intelligent activity, as well as plenty of exercise. The house you save may be your own!
